Navarātri

Devi 72 dates in 2026–2027
Traditions differ. What follows describes common practice, not the only correct practice. Observance varies by region, sampradāya and family, and Sri Kumar Gurukkal will follow your family’s tradition. Our editorial & ritual standards →

Why it matters

This Navratri day honors Shailaputri, the “Daughter of the Mountain,” symbolizing grounded strength and a firm beginning to spiritual practice. It is part of the nine-stage devotional journey through forms of the Divine Mother.

The story behind it

Navratri progressively contemplates different dimensions of Shakti—from grounding and discipline to courage, wisdom, purification and completion.

Prayers and worship

Durga/Devi pooja, “Om Dum Durgayai Namah,” Devi Mahatmyam, Lalita Sahasranama, kumkum archana, bhajans and arati; some families use a mantra specific to Shailaputri.

Fasting and devotional customs

Many devotees fast fully or partially, maintain a sattvic diet, light a daily lamp and observe region-specific practices such as Golu, Garba or Kanya Puja.

What is typically offered

Flowers, kumkum, turmeric, fruit, sweets, coconut and a lamp; color and naivedyam conventions vary by tradition.

Visiting a temple that day

This is one day of a multi-day Navratri sequence. Temple decoration, alankaram and the specific Devi form may change daily. Temple practices vary by region and sampradaya. Dress modestly, remove footwear where required, follow priest/volunteer directions, ask before photography, and check the temple’s event page for exact pooja, fasting and prasādam arrangements.

Spiritual themes

Steadfastness and grounded devotion, and progressive worship of Shakti.
