What we are aiming for
This website is built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That is the target, and most of it has been met and tested. We are not claiming certification, and we are not saying the site is perfect — no honest website can say that, and a claim of full compliance is meaningless without an independent audit.
What has been done
- Every page can be operated from the keyboard alone, and every focused element shows a clear outline. That includes the form fields — text boxes, the city field, radio and checkbox options and the wizard's buttons — which for a while had no visible focus ring at all. Date and time controls, which put focus on a part of the field the browser owns, are outlined too.
- A "Skip to main content" link is the first thing the keyboard reaches on each page.
- Dialogs — the ceremony details, the assistant and the cookie chooser — move focus in, keep it inside while open, close on Escape, and return focus to where you were.
- Text and controls meet the AA contrast ratio; nothing depends on colour alone to be understood.
- Links inside sentences are underlined, not just coloured.
- Touch targets are at least 24×24 pixels, in line with WCAG 2.2.
- Pages reflow to 320 pixels without horizontal scrolling, and text can be enlarged to 200%.
- Headings run in order, images carry meaningful alternative text, and form fields have real labels rather than placeholder text standing in for one.
- Animation is reduced automatically if your system asks for reduced motion.
- If your system asks for higher contrast, the soft cream palette steps back: every border is drawn in the strong line colour, the faint tints and shadows are removed, and grey secondary text becomes full-strength text. Nothing moves or changes size.
- In Windows High Contrast and other forced-colours modes, your colours replace ours completely. Buttons, form fields, badges and status dots are given an explicit outline so that a control which was only a shape of colour does not disappear into the page.
- Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Devanagari passages are marked with the correct language so a screen reader pronounces them properly rather than reading them as English. This happens as the page runs, so it also covers the festival names, mantras and Panchāṅgam terms the page fills in after loading.
- Where a page builds its main content with JavaScript — the request wizard, the preparation checklist and the festival calendar — turning JavaScript off no longer leaves a blank page. Each shows a short note saying so, with Gurukkal's phone, WhatsApp and email in its place.
- Pages are checked with the axe-core automated ruleset at phone and desktop widths, and keyboard operation is walked through by hand. We no longer quote a page count here — the site keeps growing, and a number printed on this page would go stale without anyone noticing. Automated tools alone are not evidence of accessibility, and we do not treat them as such.
Known limitations
- The scheduling step is provided by Cal.com and is outside our control. If you have difficulty with it, please call or WhatsApp instead — that route is always available and is never worse than the form.
- The optional in-browser AI assistant has not been tested with assistive technology as thoroughly as the rest of the site. Everything it can tell you is also written out in the pages themselves.
- The daily Panchāṅgam panel and the assistant on the home page are calculated in your browser and do not appear at all without JavaScript. The dates they show are also published as ordinary pages under Festivals, so nothing is only available there.
- The site has not had an independent accessibility audit or user testing with people who use assistive technology. That would be the next step.
If something does not work for you
Please tell us — it will be fixed. Include the page, what you were trying to do and what happened, and what you use to browse if you are comfortable saying.
